Abstract
Drug abuse is a global challenge with widespread consequences. A limited approach to this issue is ineffective and the need for comprehensive analysis, increased awareness, and a review of harm reduction policies is an undeniable necessity. The research approach was a systematic review that initially examined and studied 763 articles and then analyzed 74 articles with great care using the PRISMA method. The results emphasize the complexity of interactions between different fields and the need for interdisciplinary approaches in combating substance abuse. The comprehensive approach categorizes the harms caused by substance abuse into 2 dimensions (individual and social). Individual dimensions include (infectious diseases, mental dysfunction, criminal and legal harms, physical harms, and mental and emotional harms). Social dimensions include (environmental harms, mortality, international harms, hazardous waste, and social and communication harms). The findings of this advanced taxonomy were presented in a conceptual model with 12 main domains and multidimensional approaches and valuable insights designed to provide an opportunity to increase awareness among researchers, policymakers, and healthcare professionals and to develop more effective prevention strategies and proactive treatment interventions.
